Theme Letter

Esteemed participants,

As the Secretary General of METU College Model United Nations 2017, it is with great honour and pleasure that I welcome you all to the fourth session of our conference. Hosted by a prestigious high school, this year’s conference will take place from 15th to 18th December, in Ankara, in the heart of Turkey.

In 2015, the United Nations established its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs consist of 17 separate goals but with one single overarching aim: to ensure the prosperity of humankind by 2030. The global goals call for action and effort towards building a future that is sustainable, bright, and full of hope. Therefore, we chose ‘Enhancing Global Development’ as the theme of this year’sconference because as Ban Ki-moon, the former Secretary General of the UN, once said "Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for all.”

Despite the progressive improvements in human rights and living standards, humanity still has not managed to resolve all of its problems. One in five people in developing regions still live on less than $1.25 a day, poverty is leading to hunger, malnutrition, lack of education and social discrimination. Our natural resources are being depleted day by day and climate change is leading to many global catastrophes. Epidemics and other diseases still claim the lives of many people. Every year, millions of children die from diseases related to inadequate water supply and hygiene. 57 million children remain out of school and inequalities in education have not yet been eliminated. Women and girls still face discrimination and violence in their daily lives. Billions of people rely on primitive sources of energy which greatly contribute to climate change. An estimated one third of food is being wasted when in other parts of the world, people are suffering from hunger. Thirteen million hectares of forests are being lost annually, although they are the key to protecting biodiversity. Due to the conflict and unrest in Syria, 11 million people have been killed or forced to flee their homes.

Nonetheless, there still is hope for a better, brighter future. When presented with these facts, the significance of the Sustainable Development Goals becomes even clearer andI wholeheartedly believe that if everyone does their part, by 2030, we will have transformed our world into a developed and prosperous place.

MCMUN 2017 is a platform for the adults of tomorrow to exchange ideas and seek solutions in order to help create this world. Delegates will be discussing to end conflicts in the Security Council and to sustain economic, social, and environmental development in the General Assembly committees. For the first time, MCMUN will have all six committees of the GA in order to embrace this issue in all of its aspects. Also, for the first time, our conference includes the International Court of Justice.

Enhancing the global development of our world is only possible when everybody does their part by taking action. Participants of MCMUN 2017 will help achieve this by generating ideas and seeking solutions for the developed world we all desire.

As a conclusion, we are looking forward to the reunion in December when you will have the opportunity to lobby, debate, resolve the current problems and designate a developed globe. Remember, growth and development depend upon effort and action.

Yours sincerely,

Kıvanç Sezer

Secretary General
