As the Secretary General of METU College Model United Nations 2018, I am honoured and delighted to welcome you all to the fifth annual session of MCMUN, which will take place in one of the most respected schools in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey from 14th December to 17th December 2018.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can simply be defined as the framework of the development the United Nations envisions for a better future. Among the seventeen main goals, we have chosen the 16th goal as our guide while deciding on the theme of this year's conference. Therefore, the theme of MCMUN 2018 is 'Promoting Just, Peaceful and Inclusive Societies'.
In a world suffering from dreadful wars and never-ending crises, one must bear in mind the importance of improving the efficiency and reliability of institutions at all levels in order to ensure that all people have access to justice. In today's world, it is a fact that corruption, bribery, theft and tax evasion, all common indicators of weak institutions, cost developing countries approximately $1.26 trillion per year. When we consider that this amount of money could be used to increase the living standards of those living on less than $1.25 a day for at least six years, it is clear that action must be taken immediately.
Although the current situation regarding the issue may seem quite desperate, there has also been few significant improvements over the last decades. A number of nations have come a long way in terms of ensuring adequate and much needed peace and security to their citizens within their territories; however, in many countries, citizens still lack access to fundamental freedoms and justice; people are faced with horrific wars and violence every single day. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said “No one is free until we are all free.” Even though we have made much progress towards improving the judicial organs, we cannot consider our job as done until every single person on this planet can access justice fairly and easily.
Taking these into great consideration, our aim while deciding on the theme and agenda items was to encourage our participants to shed light on the issue of strengthening institutions in order to provide access to justice and peace for all since these two principles are the fundamental rights of all human beings.
As the next generation of world leaders and politicians, our understanding of world politics and international relations will shape tomorrow and because of that, we are obliged to keep up with the rapidly changing politics of the world, which is why we have done our best to choose agenda items which are up to date. We, wholeheartedly, hope that MCMUN 2018 will be an effective platform for all participants to raise their voices on key global issues and learn more about the art of diplomacy.
Our diligent Organising Team is working day and night to make MCMUN 2018 an unforgettable conference for all of our participants. We cannot wait for the reunion...
